Oklahoma Joe's BBQ - Kansas City

My personal favorite BBQ establishment in Kansas City is located in a gas station.  Competition in Kansas City for BBQ venues is stiff with heavy hitters such as Arthur Bryants and Gates BBQ.  But, I adore OKJoes....My obsession with Oklahoma Joe's is so strong that I can't go two weeks without lunch of dinner there.  The original Oklahoma Joe's is located at 3002 W. 47th Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas.  Don't be surprised if you run into the KC Chief's players while dining in this retro gas station as it is a team favorite.

The Olathe location is located at 11950 S. Strang Line Road with a huge dining area with lots of televisions to view your favorite sporting events.  Don't let the long lines scare you off, they move quickly and you will find an empty table to enjoy the best BBQ around. Our favorite expression when we see folks bale out of line, is "Rookies".  Anyone who has ever eaten there knows that a 5-10 minute (peak hours) wait is so worth it!  OkJoes is a must see on your next trip to the KC area.  When my brother in law, Jeff is in town from California,  we usually eat at OKJoe's twice!  That's how good it is.

My favorite sandwich is the Chicken Z Man which is also available in a pork version.  The container on the tray is delicious Gumbo....yum.  The Hog Maniac is Dan's personal favorite and the french fries the best around.

Oklahoma Joe’s Barbecue and Catering can be traced to competition barbecue and the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS). Tagging along with friends at the American Royal and The Great Lenexa BBQ Battle was all the inspiration Jeff needed to get started cooking on his own. The first smoker purchased was an Oklahoma Joe’s 24” smoker, christened below in April 1991.

The competition team, Slaughterhouse Five, went through some personnel changes the first two years and by 1993, Jeff, his wife and business partner Joy, and Jim Howell were ready to make their mark on the KCBS competition circuit. And make their mark they did, winning eight Grand Championships, including the prestigious American Royal BBQ, three Reserve Grand Championships, and the Kansas City Barbeque Society’s Grand Champion “Team of the Year” in 1993. Over the next several seasons Slaughterhouse Five won dozens more awards and was generally recognized as one of the top competition BBQ teams in the Country.

All of this eventually lead to the opening of Oklahoma Joe's restaurant in Kansas City, KS. Oklahoma Joes has gained a local and national reputation for outstanding barbecue. The Zagat national restaurant survey rated Oklahoma Joe's "Excellent" for Barbecue in 2000.

Rufus Teague's BBQ Sauce

"He put some in a jar and shared it with the boys.  They kept on painin him til he fixed up another batch.  Next thing he knew he was makin sauce all the time.  It's damn good."

My favorite BBQ sauce is hands down, Rufus Teague's - Touch of Heat Sauce bottled right here in my backyard - Shawnee, Kansas.  It's a brilliant mix of sweet and hot in the tomato base KC BBQ sauce is known for...but this one is special.  Winner of 2007 American Royal Hot Sauce Champion, and the 2007 Great American BBQ People's Choice Champion.

This is some seriously good sauce that is as good on a burger as it is on ribs!
